Years ago, I glommed onto fanfiction—chiefly DBZ and Megami Kouhousei fics, moving from het to yaoi.
And then I discovered, the wild wild world of Potterslash.
My slash jones has drawn me to slash fandoms for Criminal Minds andPsych. I’m especially keen on Shassie fics—as mentioned more than once.
Yep, I know that Shules (Shawn Spencer and Juliet O’Hara) is the canon pairing for the series, an example of art imitating life (James Roday and Maggie Lawson being a couple off-screen). And that Carlton Lassiter has, recently, been paired with Marlowe Viccellio. Fine. As I’ve said before, I get that crime shows are very straitlaced, and, more often than not, very straight; only war movies and Westerns are more heteronormative, as far as I can tell.
What keeps me in the slash fold, however, is the possibility for redefining sexuality, examining gender roles, and glimpses of different aspects to characters that one does not always get within the canon proper.
I’ve also been knocking around an idea for a Shules-to-Shassie fic—one that involves Lassiter resigning from the SBPD (in the wake of Shawn proposing to Juliet), and being declared missing.
I haven’t written it yet, but if anyone has pointers, pass them on. Please.
I make no secret of my fascination with slash; I have a serious jones for Hotch/Rossi slash, with Reid/Rossi not far behind.
And now, I’ve developed a thing for Shassie (Shawn Spencer/Carlton Lassiter) slash. That, after getting hooked on psych.
I honestly thought I’d gravitate more to Shawn/Gus—but there’s something about the love/hate relationship between these two, and that hint of a Different Kind of Tension (apologies to the Buzzcocks and their fans).
One of the reasons I like slash pairings for crime shows, I think, is that it opens a world of possibilities (emotional, romantic, sexual) that you don’t always see. Crime drama is, after all, pretty straitlaced, not to mention pretty straight. And in the absence of actual LGBTQ characters that aren’t victims or villains (or, as they call them on Criminal Minds, UnSubs), it’s as close as I can get. (I don’t have LOGO, and odds are, if PBS were to opt a Beeb police show with gay principals, it would air after midnight. Sigh.)
