Day Seven: Your zodiac sign and whether it fits you.
Which zodiac sign should I mention? I’m a Libra (unless this 13th sign sticks, in which case, I’ll become a very reluctant Virgo), and my Chinese zodiac puts me in the year of the Dragon (next year, that is).
Sticking to Libra for now: allegedly, I am a peace lover (true enough), enjoy the finer things in life (also true), and have...

What remains of the Day Six entry.
21. I enjoy cross-town travel on the buses. To me, it’s a sort of street level sociology course.
22. Favorite guilty pleasure activity: a late-night junk food run to the 7-11 on Salzedo and SW Eighth Street.
23. Favorite guilty pleasure eating: Strawberry milkshake with fries.
24. Favorite earworm: “Bad Romance,” Lady Gaga. (Yes, I am looking forward to hearing her new...

My favorite hot dog: wrapped in bacon, on a lightly toasted bun with mustard, topped with red onions, guacamole, and extra-sharp cheddar.
Give me anything to do with books, and I’m quite happy.

30 on a deadline. (Part 1)
Day six: write 30 interesting facts about yourself.
Sit tight, this may get bumpy!
I’m the youngest of five children.
One of my sibs—my older brother, David Monitor, Jr.—died at the age of 42. I never met him.
My grandmother grew chili peppers in her side yard. I started on my quest for spice, eating peppers.
I lived in Little Havana during the Mariel boatlift.

Day five: a time when you considered committing suicide
I’ve considered suicide a multitude of times—some more seriously than others.
But if I must name one—fine. Travel back in time, with me, to July 1983, during a blazing hot summer, where the skies are hazy with dust blown in from the Sahara.
I’ve graduated high school, and am dating a young man, E., who is...

Day four: your views on religion
I love God. Probably have since childhood, when every Sunday (and often on Saturday afternoons) my sibs and I would walk three blocks, to Cherry Avenue and Ninth Street, to celebrate Mass at St. Mary’s. Blame it on the stained glass, or the convent across the street; blame it, maybe, on the way sunlight would hit the pulpit, just so, during the sermon.
But...

In vino, veritas...or is that vice versa!
Day three: Your views on drugs and alcohol.
Last night, at Coral Gables’ oldest watering hole, The Bar (yes, that is the name) I jostled and pressed through a swarm of people during the Ladies’ Happy Hour (Yuengling and well drinks free for women, 5:30-7:30), enjoyed two Cape Codders, and had an interesting palare outside about Adam Richman, bacon, and what makes for proper barbecue.

So many questions, which answers should I choose?*
Day 2: Where you see yourself ten years from now.
In the year 2021, on this date, I see myself with more grey hair than I have now, a few more lines, and possibly some aches where I do not ache now.
I also see myself writing. Whether here, or bits of culled library scrap—I see myself jotting things about people I see, drinks I have enjoyed, perhaps even a few more kisses stolen between now...

30 days: and so we begin!
Day One: Your current relationship; if single, discuss how single life is.
I’m a single woman.
I’m the youngest of five children; my sisters are both grandmothers, and my surviving brother, by now, is probably a grandfather.
I have kept score, over the years, of the various marriages, divorces, hook-ups, and the like, with a slightly wary eye. And while I have entertained the notion...

Write one leaf about sled dogs.
Not much I can say about sled dogs. I’ve never been to Alaska, and have rarely encountered Huskies, Malamutes, or other such canines in South Florida.
But when I see footage from the Iditarod, or clips from shows such as Dogs 101, those eyes—crystalline and icy—defy me to look away. And when I hear the howl, I find myself thinking, “Shoot, I want to book a flight to...

Looking forward to cooler weather.
But I can tell you now, the winter strawberries are sweet, if a little tart. And the Farmer’s Market will be up and running in Coral Gables come Saturday. Makes me smile to think of it.

Number 750
The holidays are done. Thank God.
Oh, I did have some fun—plenty of roast pork, sweets, even some wine for Christmas and New Year’s—and I did enjoy the company of xxx and his family. At the end of the celebrations, though, I still came home to a studio flat and solitary downtime.
And I still had moments when I caught myself wishing I could spend time with my grandmother, my...
